Nova Sintra, September 6, 2026 — Paulo Veiga appears to have won the internal elections of the Movement for Democracy (MpD) on the island of Brava, according to preliminary, still unofficial results tallied after Sunday’s vote.

According to the available results, Paulo Veiga received 74 votes, while Meno Fernandes received 43 votes. Filipe Tavares reportedly received no votes on the island.

In total, 117 votes were counted, out of a total of approximately 503 registered party members eligible to participate in the party’s internal election on Brava.

With these figures, Paulo Veiga represents 63.25% of the votes cast, while Meno Fernandes received 36.75%. Filipe Tavares received 0% of the votes. The difference between Paulo Veiga and Meno Fernandes is 31 votes.

Despite Paulo Veiga’s lead among the party members who voted, the election in Brava was marked by a high abstention rate. Of the approximately 503 registered party members, only 117 exercised their right to vote, which corresponds to a turnout of approximately 23.26%.

On the other hand, approximately 386 party members did not go to the polls, representing an abstention rate of approximately 76.74%.

The data thus show that less than a quarter of registered party members participated in the election on the island of Brava.

Paulo Veiga’s preliminary victory on Brava comes at a decisive moment for the MpD, which is holding direct elections to choose the party’s new leadership following Ulisses Correia e Silva’s departure from the presidency of the political party.

Paulo Veiga, Meno Fernandes, and Filipe Tavares are in the running for the party leadership, in a process that is expected to culminate at the MpD National Convention, scheduled for September 25, 26, and 27.

If Brava’s figures are officially confirmed, Paulo Veiga will have secured a significant lead over Meno Fernandes on the island, winning nearly two-thirds of the votes cast.

The 31-vote difference between the two top candidates represents a lead of about 26.5 percentage points for Paulo Veiga.

The result is particularly significant given the size of the island’s local electorate and could be interpreted as a sign of support from Brava party members for Paulo Veiga’s candidacy. However, the high abstention rate is also one of the key findings of this vote and may prompt reflection on the mobilization of the party’s grassroots base.

It is important to emphasize that these figures are preliminary and unofficial, so the results may change after tabulation and validation by the MpD bodies responsible for the electoral process.

If the figures are confirmed, Paulo Veiga will be the winner on Brava Island with 74 votes (63.25%), followed by Meno Fernandes with 43 votes (36.75%), while Filipe Tavares received no votes. Voter turnout was 23.26%, with an abstention rate of 76.74% among the approximately 503 registered party members.
